Dream debut for Ferrucci in Cooper Tires British F3 Championship

Monday 1 September 2014

Santino Ferrucci enjoyed a dream debut in the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Championship after taking the win from pole in race one of the weekend at Brands Hatch.

The sixteen year-old Fortec Motorsport driver – contesting this weekend’s penultimate event of the championship as a one-off – gained pole thanks to the quickest second fastest time of the drivers in the earlier qualifying session and led each lap of the thirty-minute race to become the championship’s youngest-ever winner.

Ferrucci looked serene as he built a gap from team-mate Hong Wei Cao, who drove a measured race to second place, scoring maximum points as Ferrucci has opted not to score championship points on his British F3 outing.

In the second race of the weekend Fortec Motorsport’s Hong Wei ‘Martin’ Cao extended his championship lead after winning the morning’s race and finishing second in the afternoon race.

Cao took an emphatic victory from team-mate and title rival Rao with Saturday’s race one winner and fellow Fortec Motorsport man Santino Ferrucci taking the final podium spot. The afternoon saw Ferrucci make a perfect start from pole to win from Cao with Rao taking third.

Cao extended his championship lead with a total of 243 points from Rao’s 228 with 65 points available at the season finale. Despite shunning points, Ferrucci certainly raised eyebrows over the weekend with an exceptional debut from the sixteen year-old American by winning two of the three races at the Kent track.

Dan Wells, on his Formula 3 debut with Double R Racing, finished fourth in both of Sunday’s races. Sunday’s results add to his race one third place finish, to earn the Mobil 1 Service Centre Master of the Weekend, with his debut outing deemed to have displayed a combination of outstanding effort, significant improvement, and exceptional sportsmanship.

Camren Kaminsky moved into third position in the championships standings after finishing fifth in both of Sunday’s races to add to Saturday’s sixth placing. Fellow Double R Racing peddler Max Marshall took a fifth in race one, following that up with a DNF in race two and sixth in race three.

The final three races of the 2014 Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Championship take place at Donington Park on September 13-14.
